This is the disarming story of two worlds, made of endless facets and condemned to the exile of uncertainty, where anthropology echoes a past that knocks again at the door of reality and creates resistance, at times in vain, like the cries of Marianna Padovani and her husband Salomone Mortara, played by the winner of a David di Donatello, a Ciak d'oro and a Nastro d'argento, Barbara Ronchi, and by the equally award laden Fausto Russo Alesi, taking on the roles of the parents of Edgardo Mortara, a Jewish child born in Bologna in 1851, where the ambiguity of the Mortara household's maid set off the greatest of disputes, baptising little Edgardo in the belief that he was dying.
And so it was that in June 1858 the papal guards tore him from his family by order of Pope Pius IX, the latter played by Paolo Pierobon, who completely intoxicated the screenplay under the direction of Marco Bellocchio, one of the most highly regarded masters of auteur cinema, winner of the Silver Lion for best direction at the Venice International Film Festival for the film La Cina è vicina (China Is Near), bringing to life with this latest masterpiece Rapito, a story that really happened and that, in the last breaths before the unification of Italy, set the whole of Europe arguing.
