"Ennio" is the all-round portrait of Ennio Morricone, the most popular and prolific musician of the twentieth century, the most beloved by international audiences, twice an Oscar® winner, author of more than 500 unforgettable soundtracks.
The documentary tells his story through a long interview by Tornatore with the Maestro, testimonials from artists and directors such as Bertolucci, Montaldo, Bellocchio, Argento, the Taviani brothers, Verdone, Barry Levinson, Roland Joffé, Oliver Stone and Quentin Tarantino, fiction scenes, music and archive footage. Ennio is also an investigation aimed at revealing what is little known about Morricone. Such as his passion for chess, which perhaps has mysterious links with his music. But also the realistic origin of some of his musical intuitions, as with the coyote's howl that suggested the theme of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, or the rhythmic beating of hands on tin drums by strikers at the head of a protest march through the streets of Rome that inspired the beautiful theme of Pereira Maintains. An inventive attitude confirmed by his constant love for absolute music and his vocation for persistent experimentation.
