A film adaptation of the novel by Eshkol Nevo, as beautiful as it is demanding, Tre piani (Three Floors) marks the return of Nanni Moretti behind the camera. After Mia madre (My Mother) and the documentary Santiago, Italia, the director from Brunico has started for the first time from a subject that is not his own, examining three families who live in the same middle-class apartment block. The film, presented in competition at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, is available on DVD and Blu-ray thanks to Eagle Pictures.
On the first floor of an apartment building live Lucio, Sara and their little girl, Francesca. In the flat next door are Giovanna and Renato, who often act as their babysitters. One evening Renato, who has been entrusted with Francesca, disappears with the child for many hours. When the two are finally found, Lucio fears that something terrible has happened to his daughter… On the second floor live Monica and Giorgio, she coping with her first experience of motherhood, he always away for work. When Giorgio realises that the marriage cannot work this way, it is perhaps too late. Dora is a judge, like her husband Vittorio, and together with their son Andrea they live on the top floor of the building. One night the young man, drunk, runs over and kills a woman. Distraught, he asks his parents to help him avoid prison, but Vittorio believes that his son must be judged and condemned for what he has done. Dora will be faced with the choice between her husband and her son.
Tre piani tells the stories of three families who live in the same building and explores universal themes: from guilt to justice, by way of the consequences of our choices, all the way to parenthood. Nanni Moretti brings to the big screen very fragile characters, skilfully drawn by Nevo, and goes further, seeking to push beyond the boundaries of the book.
The stories of the three families in Tre piani are told separately, as if they were three different films, only to converge and intertwine. Nanni Moretti, here also an actor, overdoes nothing: he adopts a spare directorial style and relies heavily on dialogue, enhanced by the great acting qualities of the cast. The cast, indeed, is of the very highest level: Margherita Buy, Riccardo Scamarcio, Alba Rohrwacher, Adriano Giannini, Elena Lietti, Alessandro Sperduti, Denise Tantucci, Anna Bonaiuto, Paolo Graziosi, Stefano Dionisi and Tommaso Ragno.
Tre piani will not become part of the Top 5 of Nanni Moretti's filmography, but it remains a worthwhile work, probably the least “Morettian” yet equally rich in food for thought. A film well worth seeing.
