Galbani is an Italian food group, producer of mozzarella, ricotta, butter, soft cheeses such as the crescenza and semi-hard cheeses. It originates in 1882 from the dairy of Davide and Egidio Galbani, located in Ballabio, an Italian municipality in the province of Lecco in Lombardy, precisely at the entrance to the Valsassina valley, and later moved to Maggianico, still in the province of Lecco. In 1896, Egidio Galbani moved to a farmstead in Melzo, to work there as a milkman; the area was favourable for the dairy industry thanks to the abundance of water available to grow fodder. After the early years of the 1900s, the latter first built a new workshop, and then a real plant that was the main production hub for the decades to come. The first great success dates back to 1906, with the launch of the Bel Paese, an entirely Italian aged cheese that will also find great success abroad. The acquisition of the plants of Certosa di Pavia, which stands in Guinzano, in the municipality of Giussago, right near the Certosa di Pavia, dates back to the 1920s. The success of Galbani is also due to the efficient fleet of vans always on the move and to the network of depots able to supply the numerous points of sale among which the dairy market is still fragmented. The company also distributes its products in the largest European countries, and in Japan and the United States. The Group today employs around 3,000 collaborators and, with Spa Egidio Galbani, has 5 plants in Italy, all with production lines certified according to the BRC Global Standard Food and with the environmental certification UNI EN ISO 14001. Producing in respect of tradition and with the guarantee of more than 2,000,000 careful checks a year, carried out with cutting-edge technologies along the entire production chain, the Group translates into every activity the value of trust, which continues to distinguish the company that has its roots in the Galbani tradition. The latter is marked by an international vision, a strong Italian identity, and consolidated experience and presence across the territory that has led to a great opening abroad. Today Galbani cheeses are the best-selling in Italy and the most exported, present in over 140 countries across the 5 continents.

The production and ageing of our cheeses take place in the 4 Lombard dairies of Casale Cremasco (CR), Corteolona (PV), Certosa (PV) and Introbio (LC), while the cured meats are made in the historic plant of Melzo (MI). Most of the milk, milked in Italy (52%), is consumed fresh or used for the production of PDO cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano, Grana Padano, Gorgonzola and many others. The remaining part (48%) is instead destined for dairy products. In the Galbani plants, most of the milk (well over 70%) is collected from 550 farms in Piedmont and Lombardy, with which relationships are historic and well established. The remaining part is imported from European Union farms that are partners of the Group. All the processed milk is meticulously checked, traced and analysed to ensure the safety, quality and goodness of the products. The procedures for purchasing, transporting and collecting the milk are very strict: not a single drop of milk can be used if it has not first been traced, checked, tested and recognised as suitable from the very origin. Specialised staff carry out systematic checks on all the barns and, every day, on all the milk tankers arriving at the plants. Each one is examined with chemical and microbiological analyses designed to certify the quality and safety of their content. The milk freshly milked by the breeders is immediately cooled to 4°C, the optimal temperature to preserve its taste and organoleptic properties, checked and stored in special refrigerated cooling tanks. Within a few hours it is transferred to the tankers used for transport. The same level of attention to compliance with the cold chain is always applied, in all phases of production in the production plants, up to the final distribution at the points of sale, to guarantee all the goodness and freshness of our products. As many as 92 specialised professionals ensure the quality and safety of the cheeses along the entire production chain, through more than 6000 daily checks. They carry out laboratory analyses on the raw materials, on ingredients and packaging, on the intermediate processing stages and on the finished products to always guarantee high quality standards and the absolute safety of the products.
