The new Vespa GTS (Granturismo) presented in Rome: Tuttoitalia.ch tested it for you

With its renewed design, Vespa’s flagship model evolves in every respect, from its unique and unmistakable style to its cutting-edge technical equipment. With improved brakes and suspension, new instrumentation and the Keyless system, the Vespa GTS is even more elegant, safe and comfortable. There are four versions of the legendary “Vespone”, which takes on a distinctive personality in each model. Two engine types: the classic 125cc and the more prestigious 300cc, the most powerful single-cylinder engine ever made in Vespa’s history.

The Vespa GTS will be remembered as one of the best loved two-wheelers in the world, since it follows the legendary “Vespone”, the name given to the Vespa with the larger body and strictly in steel. A two-wheeler on which to move elegantly around the city, but also ideal for travelling, or even ready for adventure thanks to its increasingly generous engines.

Vespa GTS (Granturismo) presented in Rome with Tuttoitalia

The Granturismo, born in 2003, is present today in more than 100 countries with over 50'000 units sold last year alone. Always in search of the perfect balance between style, technology, sustainability and performance, Vespa remains authentic, iconic and, with its unmistakable lines, so characteristic that it is immediately recognisable. Among the new features we find the new Full LED lights (both front and rear); the new handlebar, more comfortable and easier to handle (thanks to a careful study of ergonomics); the instrumentation is also updated with a new 3" analogue-LCD display or a practical 4,3” Full Colour TFT display for the Supertech model. All versions are fitted with the keyless system for faster starting and with a Bike Finder function to keep up with the times. The new saddle, the higher-performing shock absorbers and the 12'' wheels with disc brakes offer an even more stable and comfortable ride (much appreciated on the streets of Rome). Another new feature is the remote control for opening the saddle from a distance, which makes life easier when we are in a hurry and there are many other bikes around us. The range of engines consists of 125cc and 300cc engines. The gentler version boasts a 125cc i-get Euro 5 with Start & Stop RISS system (Regulator Inverter Start & Stop System) for a snappy and quiet ride (max 14 hp), while the second version (my favourite, even if heavier) is fitted with a 300cc hpe (high performance engine) Euro 5 for those who would still like to keep consumption low, but with decidedly greater performance (it goes up to 23 hp). As far as safety is concerned, we can say that the level is decidedly high. The new single arm of the front suspension has been redesigned with the addition of a tie rod to reduce friction, offering more comfort and increasing stability at high speeds and during braking. The rear suspension with double hydraulic shock absorber, coil spring and preload adjustable in height in 4 positions also improves, together with the new set-up, the comfort of the passenger. There are new features in the braking system too, thanks to the new Brembo brake pump and the new caliper, which reduces the braking distance.

Always connected with VESPA MIA

The VESPA MIA connectivity system (standard on Vespa GTS SuperSport and SuperTech) makes it possible to connect the smartphone to the on-board electronic system of the Vespa GTS via Bluetooth. Once the smartphone is connected to the Vespa GTS (paired with the vehicle through the dedicated Vespa app), all notifications relating to incoming calls and messages are shown on the display. The system also allows the management  of calls through the practical joystick placed on the left-hand control block and the use of voice commands to make calls or listen to music by activating a playlist. On the Vespa GTS SuperTech (the most technologically advanced of the four versions) the TFT display also acts as a navigation system, accompanying the rider along the route, preset in the Vespa app, with directions in the form of pictograms. As well as offering infotainment and navigation functions, the app is also an incredible source of useful information on the condition of the vehicle, riding parameters and trip statistics, which can be displayed on a smartphone.

The 300 HPE engine: the most powerful and agile Vespa of all time

The new Vespa GTS boasts the latest evolution of the single-cylinder 300 cc, 4-stroke, 4-valve, liquid-cooled engine with electronic injection. The result of the R&D experience of the Piaggio Group, it is called 300 HPE (High Performance Engine). The unit has benefited from extensive work aimed at increasing performance and improving rideability, while at the same time reducing consumption and noise. Engine power reaches a maximum of 17,5 kW (23,8 hp) at 8250 rpm, while maximum torque is 26 Nm at 5250 rpm. Benchmark values that are immediately appreciated when accelerating from a standstill, combined with a significant reduction in consumption, for a range of 30,3 km/l in the WMTC cycle. The 300 HPE is the highest-performing engine ever fitted to a Vespa, a result achieved thanks to the meticulous work of Piaggio technicians on most of the components. The project sought above all to optimise thermodynamic power and reduce friction and engine noise, while at the same time increasing performance and overall rideability, with weights and volumes at the top of the category. The engine is controlled by a latest-generation Magneti Marelli MIUG4 control unit which, with better computing capacity, helps to improve the overall efficiency of the engine and also makes it possible to start the engine almost instantly, after only two turns of the crankshaft.
