From 20 December 2023 to 7 April 2024, the extraordinary exhibition "Caravaggio and his time - between naturalism and classicism" will be hosted in Halle 5 of Messe Basel. A Swiss first with works from the Caravaggio workshop and similar.
Caravaggio was the promoter of a great stylistic and cultural change. His figure is still relevant, his works continue to excite four hundred years after his passing. The exhibition, conceived by the cultural association Metamorfosi, presents some of the most important masterpieces produced starting from his training in Lombardy, moving on to the successes created in Rome and Naples and concluding with the last years of his tragic life, which earned him the nickname of damn artist.
The works on display accompany the visitor on a complete journey into the phenomenon of "Caravaggism". Among the artists present in the exhibition, in addition to Caravaggio: Orazio and Artemisia Gentileschi, Guercino, Annibale Carracci, Simone Peterzano.
