Jazz saxophonist Raffaele Casarano in concert in Geneva

The first representative of Italian new jazz, saxophonist Raffaele Casarano already made his mark in Geneva during the fabulous Dhafer Youssef concert in September 2021. The audience was won over by the atmospheric and powerful sounds of his saxophone. With a very promising new album, ANI’, a singular journey that brings together jazz, world music, hip hop and electronics, Raffaele will at the same time offer a visual experience with a light design created especially for the concert.

Today considered one of the most eclectic jazz musicians of the Italian peninsula, Raffaele is a leading musician with several collaborations with national and international artists to his name. Among the very many, we mention Buena Vista Social Club, Sting, Dhafer Youssef, Paolo Fresu, Noa, Giuliano Sangiorgi, Francesco De Gregori, Fiorella Mannoia, Neri Marcoré, Daniele Silvestri, Fiorello, Malika Ayane.

Raffaele was born in 1981. From a very young age he drew close to the world of the saxophone and in 2004 he graduated from the “T. Schipa” Conservatory in Lecce. In September 2004 he founded the Locomotive project, which would see him perform in several Italian clubs.
Casarano is artistic director and creator of the “Locomotive Jazz Festival” (which reached its fifteenth edition in 2020), born in Sogliano Cavour (Le), his home town, today established in the city of Lecce and spread across the whole Salento and Apulia area. The Festival has hosted numerous internationally renowned guests alongside jazz musicians from Salento, winning wide public approval www.locomotivejazzfestival.it

For the project “R. Casarano & Locomotive”, in November 2005 he recorded his first album, “Legend”, for Dodicilune Records, with the participation of the Orchestra of the “T. Schipa” Conservatory; while “Replay” (Emarcy-Universal), the quartet’s second album, dates from 2008.

Both works feature Paolo Fresu as a guest of the group. In April 2010 he took part as solo sax in the music composed by the singer of Negramaro, Giuliano Sangiorgi, for “Koltès”, the show by the actor Claudio Santamaria. 2013 is the year of maturity: he worked on several dates of the international tour of Manu Katché’s line-up and released, on Paolo Fresu’s Tǔk label, “Noé”, the new album of his Locomotive Quartet.
